In a recent edition of the Japanese magazine, V Jump, Square-Enix have officially announced a new Final Fantasy title for mobile phones.
The game, Final Fantasy Legends: Hikari to Yami no Senshi (translated as Warriors of Light and Darkness) will be a completely new game (rather than a remake of the “FF Legend” series) created by the same team who made Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.
Final Fantasy Legends is released this September in Japan for iMode users and later this year for EZweb users. The first chapter will be free but following chapters will cost somewhere between ¥315 to ¥525.
Final Fantasy Legends: Warriors of Light and Darkness, looks to be a return to the roots of the series, featuring 2D sprite graphics like those of the early NES and SNES games. Expect a story of the usual good vs evil, light vs dark and crystal searching!
It will also feature a job system for your characters, of which Square-Enix have stated will be particularly important to how different tasks/missions are structured. Nothing more was revealed but perhaps this will require you to change job or class depending on the type of dungeon or enemies..?
But more importantly… Final Fantasy games for mobiles don’t tend to make their way to the Western world, but with Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, it was also released on the Nintendo WiiWare in Japan (again), North America and Europe a year after it’s debut on Japanese mobiles. Our hope is that the same scenario is repeated for Final Fantasy Legends! :3
In the meantime, Square-Enix have a teaser site for Legends with the nostalgic prologue music over it… more updates on this as it is announced!
