Rumours have been confirmed, last year’s Final Fantasy XIII officially has a sequel due for release on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 next Winter.
Square-Enix report on the official Playstation Blog, that the game will feature a new story that “stems from the previous title” and an “evolved battle system”.
A new high quality screen accompanied the announcement along with the new Amano logo above.
A one and a half minute teaser trailer has already been released. It features a lead-in from the end of Final Fantasy XIII with Lightning’s Japanese voice over (probably recounting events from the first game) followed by Lightning in a brand new medieval armour inspired costume with a half-skirt of white feathers and a shield on one arm. She stands surrounded by falling white feathers. She wields a new weapon very reminiscent of FFVIII’s “gunblade” then it cuts to Lightning standing back to back with a dark male figure wielding a weapon of blue flame. They spring into action and strike each other’s weapons as the screen flashes to the new logo, captioned: “Coming 2011 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360″.

Considering the mixed response to Square-Enix’s last direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2 and of Final Fantasy XIII itself, fans appeared disappointed. Popular gaming news site, Destructoid, gave the game a below average score of 4/10 in their controversial review, while Japanese magazine Famitsu gave it a generous 49/50.
As of yet, we’re not holding our breath, but instead looking to the release of the long awaited Final Fantasy XIII: Versus. Feel free to drop us a comment with your thoughts, which are you looking forward to most, Final Fantasy XIII-2 or Final Fantasy XIII: Versus? Will FFXIII-2 make up for FFXIII’s lack of story and depth? Or will it miss the mark again? Will FFXIII: Versus really be as awesome as it looks?? Only time will tell! (Or perhaps this subbed trailer will…)
